Detail: the top showing the handle. This form of handle with embossed and gilded abstracted flora was typical of the period, which drew its aesthetic inspiration from classical designs.

The box is edged with light wood and the base is finished with a line made up of light and dark stringing and kingwood cross banding. This is a complex composition, but it is very fine and gives the box a tone of understated elegance.
