Antique Fully Fitted Coromandel Sewing Box by Parkins and Gotto Circa 1860

Antique fully fitted inlaid coromandel sewing box  by Parkins & Gotto, with chased gilded brass hinges and lock and inlays of brass mother of pearl  and abalone to the top and front. Inside there is a fitted lift out tray which is covered with blue paper and silk with supplementary lids covered in blue velvet. The box has ten matching turned carved and pierced mother of pearl spools and mother pearl handled tools including tweezers bodkin and hook. There is a document wallet in the lid.  1860.

The trade labels of Parkins & Gotto describe them as Stationers and Manufacturers of Fancy Goods.

Origin: UK; Parkins and Gotto London ;  Circa: 1860; Materials:  coromandel, gilded brass ,mother of pearl, abalone. 

Size: 30.7 cm wide by 22.7 cm by 13 cm:  12 inches wide by  9  inches by 5.1  inches.

Inside there is a fitted lift out tray which is covered with blue paper and silk with supplementary lids covered in blue velvet. 

The box has ten matching turned carved and pierced mother of pearl spools and mother pearl handled tools including tweezers bodkin and hook. 

There is a document wallet in the lid.  The document wallet is accessed by releasing a catch. The front is a clouded mirror framed with  blue silk decorated with gold embossing.

The top and front are inlaid with chased brass mother of pearl and abalone.

The box is marked on a small  bone plaque "Parkins and Gotto". 

Parkins and Gotto,  who were at 24 and 25 Oxford St , London were renowned for their use of interesting timbers. They advertised themselves as Stationers.

 They were at this address from 1850s. Previously they were at Hanway Street nearby.

The lock and lock plate are chased and gilded. The catch is for the document wallet.

The escutcheon is engraved mother of  pearl.

 

The box has ten turned, carved and pierced mother of pearl spools. 

The lower side of the spools are bone.

The top has an engraved mother of pearl escutcheon with a small blank shield. All the edges are rounded solid ebony. 

The inlays are done in continuing strips of engraved brass mother of pearl and abalone.
