Antique Rosewood Sewing  box,  circa 1850.

Antique Rosewood Sewing  box, of rectangular form circa 1850 inlaid with white metal lines and mother of pearl, with lift-out tray.

It measures: 11.75" wide by 8.6" and 5" tall.

Detail showing the careful construction the rounded rosewood edge and the quality and figure of the rosewood.

The escutcheon:

the pretty design is achieved by inlaying light colored mother of pearl in a background of darker and more iridescent abalone.

The top of the box is also accented with a similar inlay of mother of pearl in a background of darker and more iridescent abalone.

The lift-out tray is covered in its original silvered paper which contrasts with the original red silk.

The tray has a slight warp, which does not interfere with the closing of the box.

For the historical context of this box read the relevant part of Antigone's Online Antique Box Book. If you click here you will go there.

We have written a highly  illustrated book on Antique Boxes and Tea caddies  which is being  published by  Schiffer Books USA.
