Description:

A box veneered in beautifully figured walnut. Although simple, the box’s understated quality is evident in the workmanship.

There is a rounded edge formed by an inserted edging which provides strength, as well as softness of form.

Condition: The brass escutcheon is a later repair.

Size 9.8”x4.9”, 3.3” tall. 25cmx12.5cm, 8.5 tall.

Circa 1850

The internal lining of gold embossed red velvet and cream silk is original. It is most unusual to find such a finely fitted jewellery tray which is not part of a dressing box. (See our book Antique Boxes, Tea Caddies, and Society -- 1700--1880, ISBN: 0764316885  Antigone Clarke & Joseph O'Kelly, A Schiffer Book for collectors Chapter 20, figure 458).
