Reference: Jb 111

Description:

A visually stunning table cabinet veneered in rosewood and inlaid in brass. The shape is an excellent example of early nineteenth century homage to monumental architectural grammar inspired by Egyptian temples. The slightly inwards tapering form and the narrowing side decoration, guide the vision upwards to the superb robustly constructed top. The carving is deep and strong emphasising the monumental suggestiveness of the piece.

The brass inlaid designs are primarily in the neoclassical tradition making strong use of the anthemion and palmette motifs. The looping foliated borders are executed with control and precision and symmetrically arranged.

An exceptional piece which combines many Regency features with imagination, originality and superb workmanship. (See ABT figure 521 and Chapter 4).

 Condition: Good.

Size: 10.5”x8.2” (bottom base), 10.5” tall with feet. 26.5cmx20.5cm, 26.5, tall.

Circa 1815-20.

The interior is arranged as a series of drawers with the last drawer allowing for inkwells and paper to be kept, while the top and the other drawers can hold “treasures”. The folding down front, which is covered in original gold tooled leather provides a writing surface. The yellow silk in the top sections is a later covering. It is very likely that the original was covered in yellow paper.

There is however a rather bucolic, romantic note introduced in the central panel, which depicts sheep under a tree.

The composition is carefully arranged with a central tree balancing the two sides rendering it harmonious with the stylised borders.

The bucolic scene is in accord with ancient classicism, so the piece combines ancient classical understanding with Regency neoclassicism.
