A Chinese Export Lacquer Table Cabinet with Gold Decoration Circa 1850.

Description:

A Chinese Lacquer table cabinet. The  doors are structured with a raised surround and central ovals. It is decorated all over in gold. 

The background is painted in stylised tendrils, and the ovals in oriental figures relaxing in pavilioned gardens. The theme of figures in gardens continues on the sides. This is a charming composition, which responded to the European dream of the fabulous Cathay , that is China and other Eastern countries, which were perceived as wondrous lands of mythical beauty. Size: 13.2”x7.8”, 13.5” tall. 33.2cmx20cm, 34.2cm tall.

Condition: Cracks and losses. Repairs near escutcheon. Worn a little on sides, a lot on top. This is often the case where the soft gold is rubbed by years of use.
