"Figure: 460. A Chinese hardwood mirror box. This is an example of a robust and yet elegant compact item of small furniture. Such boxes are seen on illustrations of traditional oriental interiors, often with ladies kneeling on the floor in front of the open mirror. The lacquer work detail here, which shows such a box  is from a Chinese export lacquer sewing box.  European cabinet makers must have derived their inspiration for folding devices from examples of such boxes brought to Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries."
