Description: A circular pressed tortoiseshell snuff box. The pattern is exceptionally fine and consists of fine lines interwoven with a looped pattern on either side of gold covered raised dots. This is reminiscent of the fashion for jewelry with integrated human hair, which was first popular during the eighteenth century. The wider lines are rounded and look as if they are indeed made of a soft material which is pressed down by the narrower lines. The piece has the symmetrical austerity of neoclassicism combined with pleasing tactile curving. The gold is used sparingly as a discreet accent.

Origin: English

Circa: 1780-90.

Materials: Tortoiseshell

Size: 3" across. 7.6 cm.

Condition: Some gold wear on a few dots.
