Description: A Vernis Martin snuff box, painted with a curious scene of Sino-European inspiration. This was an interesting development of the chinoiserie style, which was practiced in France by important artists such as Francois Boucher. (see Antique Boxes, Tea Caddies, and Society, 1700--1880
Antigone Clarke & Joseph O'Kelly,
ISBN: 0764316885
pages 18-21).  There are traces of a gold background on the surface, which is textured with a wavy design. Although worn this is an important box in terms of the aesthetic and cultural connotations it illustrates.

Origin: France.

Circa: 1760

Materials: Vernis Martin

Size: 3.1" across. 7.7cm

Condition: Wear and chips.
