Description:
Ref:   102fs    http://hygra.com/face/102fs

Antique Face Screen in paper with drawing of boats. C. 1820.

The surround of the screen is in the neoclassical style. The gold decoupage decoration is of symmetrical acanthus leaves and a dotted gold line. The embossed inner frame is symmetrically arranged with swirling acanthus leaves, the four corners with identical wreaths in oak with a stylised central bloom. There is however a domestic note inserted in the classical arrangement: the flowers on the end of each leaf symbolise countries of the United Kingdom . Thistle for Scotland , rose for England and trefoil for Ireland .

The drawing is of boats near the shore with a sturdy castle on the rocks. It is drawn in pencil by a talented artist. The movement of the sea and the approaching menace in the sky are drawn with assured strokes and subtle shading. It was most probably drawn from life or first hand experience.

The lively scene appears more dramatic framed by the controlled surround.

The handle is turned in an elegant design and gilded

The embossing is raised. I mention this because in some of the photos there is an optical illusion which makes the embossing appear as de-bossing.

Paper embossing was developed in the 19th C and in the UK is inseparably linked with the firm of Dobbs.
