Description:
Ref:   115fs    http://hygra.com/face/115fs

Pair of Antique Face Screens in papier mâché painted with Gothic architectural scenes. C.1850.

The pictures depict grand ecclesiastical buildings.
These edifices became fashionable places to visit in the middle of the 19th century, as a spirit of patriotism swept the country.
A feature which is particularly interesting is the painting of the figures in medieval dress.
This harmonised with the mood of returning to a bygone native culture and rejecting neoclassicism.

The painting is executed on a ground of metallic powder, a devise which gives a hint of background sheen behind the pigments.

The handles are a tour de force of turning and carving. They are  elegant and have a wonderful texture.    The handles are tactile. of ornamental turning, or OT for short.

Origin: UK ;  Circa: 1860 ; Materials: papier mâché and wood.

Size:  Screen 22.5 cm wide by 22.5 cm; handle 22cm long: 9 inches wide by 9 inches; handle 8.6  inches.

Condition:  Please refer to the above photographs for details of condition.
