Description:
Ref:  153fs    http://hygra.com/face/153fs

Pair of Antique Face Screens in painted silk. C. 1800.

Each screen is painted with a bucolic picture, the one with a woman in the landscape, the other with a girl in a garden.

Unlike the figures which are in blocks of solid colour, the flowers, birds, trees and rocks are lightly painted in a few strokes.

It was fashionable in the 18th century for aristocratic ladies to play at been shepherdesses, or other rural women.

The subject matter of these screens reflects this fashion.

They were most probably painted by the owner.

The handles are in turned and gilded wood.

Origin: UK ;  Circa:1800 ; Materials: silk and wood

Size:  Screen 19.5 cm wide by 23.5cm; handle 21.7 cm long: 7.7 inches wide by9.4 inches; handle 8.5  inches.

Condition:  Please refer to the above photographs for details of condition. At some stage of their life the screens were repaired by sticking another piece of silk on the back. They are fragile. To be enjoyed for their delicate beauty without unnecessary handling.
