Description:
Ref:   156fs    http://hygra.com/face/156fs

Pair of Antique papier mâché Face Screens with Chinoiserie decoration.

The paintings speak for themselves: they have all the crazy elements of Chinoiserie. The perspective is replaced by a whimsical arrangement of exotic elements creating a fairy tale landscape where the people can amuse themselves for ever and a day.

On one screen we have an elephant with round feet and floppy ears, a pavilion with a stripy curling roof festooned with neoclassical (! What are they doing here?) swags, kissing exotic birds in flight, exotically dressed figures, surprising normal looking swans and the inevitable exuberant gigantic flora.

On the other we get similar designs only now the pavilion has grown and even has a cross on the top. The elephant is replaced by a red striped zebra with a child rider. The leaves and flowers are still fierce. Intriguingly near the pond the round flowers (?) are now upwards.

On the back the flowers are more normal and recognisable even if the butterflies are rather strange. Roses, sunflowers, foxgloves, peonies and one or two exotics.

These screens have no handles. They were made to be attached to fixed stands near the fire. They are very decorative in their own right and great fun.

Origin: UK ;  Circa: 1820 ; Materials: papier mâché .

Size:  Screen 31.5 cm wide by 26.2cm; 12.4  inches wide by 10.4 inches;. The screens are larger than usual and have never had handles.

Roses, sunflowers, foxgloves, peonies and one or two exotics.

These screens have no handles.

I don't think they were ever much used, just treasured and protected.

They were made to be attached to fixed stands near the fire. They are very decorative in their own right and great fun.

Surprising normal looking swans and the inevitable exuberant gigantic flora.

The leaves with gold leaf under and then painted in with the black and transparent red.

It is a life form hovering over the swans!

Kissing exotic birds in flight: love birds.

The beaks and the wings just touch, while the eyes  look out at you.

There is another version of this with the birds further apart on the other screen.
