Description:
Ref:   164fs    http://hygra.com/face/164fs

Pair of Antique Face Screens in paper with decoupage decoration and pencil drawings. C. 1810.

The screens are framed with cut out painted acanthus leaves and berries in the neoclassical tradition. There is also a square decoupage frame around the main pictures.

One screen depicts cottages in a landscape. Two small figures wind their way up the country lane. There are trees in full leaf in the distance and birds flying above. There is a hint of cloudiness in the sky. The scene is drawn in an assured hand and it evokes the tranquillity of an English village in summer.

The other screen depicts a country church in the neo-gothic style. A lonely figure wanders in the graveyard in front of the church. Some tombstones are seen on the left, already falling to the side, suggesting the age of the graveyard. There is history here. The drawing is very fine, the virtuosity of the artist especially evident in the treatment of the trees.

A sad romantic note.

The handles  are turned and gilded in an unfussy elegant style.

The embossing is raised. I mention this because in some of the photos there is an optical illusion which makes the embossing appear as de-bossing.

Paper embossing was developed in the 19th C and in the UK is inseparably linked with the firm of Dobbs.
