Anglo Indian, Vizagapatam Porcupine Quill Horn and Ivory Basket-form box Circa 1850.
 
A sandalwood  box of basket form veneered with porcupine quills framed with incised and lac filled ivory having a horn handle and standing on turned horn feet. Anglo Indian Vizagapatam circa 1850.

It measures:  11"by 8" and 5" tall (not including handle.

"One very successful adaptation was that of the English "basket" form, in Anglo Indian work. Boxes veneered in quills, gave the impression of baskets made of reeds, thus utilizing the special quality of the material. Although very effective, they were not made in any numbers, as examples of early quill baskets are now rare. "

The handle the feet and the handle are horn.

The box is made with sandal wood still retaining its particular perfume.

The penned inscription on the bottom indicates that the box was gifted in (18)55.
