A Burr Walnut Writing Box Edged in Brass, Circa 1860.
A very good example of a brass edged burr walnut veneered writing box. Note that no screws or pins are visible on the brass. Both the outside and the interior of the box are French polished.

15.5" by 9.5".

Circa 1860.

Detail showing the brass corner, black edging with further inlaid lines, and slightly faded beautifully patinated surface.

The writing surface retains its original gold embossed leather.

Detail of the original fine gold embossing.

Expected wear on the leather.

The flaps open to reveal paper compartments. Under the pen and inkwell section there is a panel which can be sprung open to reveal two secret drawers.

For the historical context of this writing box read the relevant part of Antigone's Online Antique Box Book. If you click here you will go there.

We have written a highly  illustrated book on Antique Boxes and Tea caddies  which is being  published by  Schiffer Books USA. This box has been specially photographed for inclusion.
