Anglo Indian Writing Slope Veneered all over with Ivory and Sadeli Mosaic Circa 1840.

An unusual writing slope overlaid with sadeli mosaic and ivory. 11.5"wide. Mid 19th century.

This writing slope is veneered in ivory, with circles and lines of sadeli mosaic. The sadeli mosaic predominates.

The patterns are juxtaposed with skill and aesthetic awareness.

The designs patterns look deceptively simple.

The fact is they emerged from a culture, which had mastered geometry and understood how to generate a pattern from a set number of points.

The patterns are  harmoniously composed.

The  incredible complexity is not immediately apparent to the uninitiated.

For more of the complexity of Sadeli mosaic see  Fine Rare Early 19th C. Anglo Indian Ivory and  Sadeli  Mosaic  Tea Caddy.  Circa 1830

The mosaic is composed of pewter, ivory, stained ivory,  and ebony.
