Description:
Ref: 127fs    http://hygra.com/face/127fs

Pair of Antique painted Face Screens. The screens are painted with landscape views, one marked Newport Shropshire and the other Lilleshall Abbey. They are also signed with the initials HUL. They are the work of a talented artist, executed with sensitivity.

The picture of the Abbey has a rather melancholy aura with the ruins framed by trees. The ground is in shades of brown, gray and dull yellow, suggesting the approach of winter. The trees, painted in delicate strokes are almost diaphanous; they have lost their summer vigour. The landscape in the background is suggested by ghostly tree shapes.  This fluid treatment of nature suggests an experienced talented hand.

The second screen features a town in the distance. There are autumnal trees painted in confident delicate strokes on the right. Two beautifully painted cows stand under the trees. Two other cows graze in the distance. Browns and blue gray tones suggest autumn.

These screens are not just decorated. They are unique works of art in their own right.

The backs are covered in printed paper. The wooden handles are turned and gilded.
