A Coromandel Writing box inlaid With Mother of Pearl and Abalone depicting exotic horsemen, Circa 1850.
A mahogany writing box veneered in coromandel and inlaid in mother of pearl, abalone shell and brass.

The exotic horsemen are an unusual theme. The work is executed skillfully, utilizing the color and light values of the shells to create a sense of movement.

The box is immaculately finished inside, and out, the coromandel facings are punctuated with mother of pearl dots.

Quality work with a very smooth look which betrays dependence on mechanical processes. Mid 19th century.

Dimensions: 15.75" wide 9.4" deep 4.5"high (closed).

40cm wide 24cm deep 11.5cm high (closed)

Detail: The exotic horsemen are depicted in mother of pearl and abalone using the natural colors, patterns and iridescence of the shell.

Each piece must have been selected carefully. Further detail is added with engraving.

This is mother of pearl inlay at its best.

Detail:  The exotic horsemen resting on their shields.

It is interesting to compare the inlay with the inlay in
